Story About Investment
At our first track and field meeting this past Thursday, I encouraged our kids to come out to the winter practices that are optional to prepare for the upcoming season. This is the story that I read to them and afterwards, we discussed it's not about the the talent that you were given, but what you do with that talent and how much you can build on that talent.
"A man was going off on an extended trip. He called his servants together and delegated responsibilities. To one he gave five thousand dollars, to another two thousand, to a third one thousand, depending on their abilities. Then he left. Right off, the first servant went to work and doubled his master's investment. The second did the same. But the man with the single thousand dug a hole and carefully buried his master's money.
"After a long absence, the master of those three servants came back and settled up with them. The one given five thousand dollars showed him how he had doubled his investment. His master commended him: 'Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.'
"The servant with the two thousand showed how he also had doubled his master's investment. His master commended him: 'Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.'
"The servant given one thousand said, 'Master, I know you have high standards and hate careless ways, that you demand the best and make no allowances for error. I was afraid I might disappoint you, so I found a good hiding place and secured your money. Here it is, safe and sound down to the last cent.'
"The master was furious. 'That's a terrible way to live! It's criminal to live cautiously like that! If you knew I was after the best, why did you do less than the least? The least you could have done would have been to invest the sum with the bankers, where at least I would have gotten a little interest.
“Take the thousand and give it to the one who risked the most. And get rid of this coward who won't go out on a limb. Throw him out into utter darkness.’
Don’t be scared to work hard or to succeed. If you do, you will be worthless like Servant #3 and be thrown out into utter darkness of society.

Rest in Peace Amanda and Natalie
As I start the day and get ready for our last summer track practice of the week, I can't help thinking about my two former athletes at Cathedral Catholic who died two days ago in a car crash. They were coming back from a cross country camp in Mammoth and getting ready to go off to college; they were also both going to run for their respected schools. The two girls were the sweetest and the nicest kids that you could ever meet and on top of that, they were great runners due to hard work and dedication. I can honestly say that it was truly an honor to coach these girls. When I think about them, it reminds me how precious life is and how we could be taken at anytime. We always hear it but we don't believe or think about it until something like this happens. We must live our lives as if we were going to die tomorrow; we must work harder, laugh louder, give more, speak sweeter, and love deeper. Though I am at a different school now and have the privilege of coaching a new group of kids, this upcoming track season will be dedicated to Amanda and Natalie, two girls who loved running and gave up so much to be the best that they could be. To honor Amanda and Natalie, I hope to teach my current athletes about these girls and inspire them with their stories.
Amanda and Natalie, may you rest in paradise and I hope you girls are running up in heaven.

Improving
We are on week 3 of our summer track program and things are improving, slowly. We had about 15 kids today, lifting and running in the 80 degree weather. The key to next season's success will largely be based on how much the kids are willing to give up their summers and put in hard work. It'll be interesting to see where our numbers will be in a month or so...will the kids settle for being average or pursue excellence? I'm praying for the latter.
"The will to win is nothing without the will to prepare"
*It was also great to see about 25 kids out for the first day of cross country summer practice. Let's keep it going.
