Bernstein Track & Field: The Beginning

Welcome to the Bernstein track and field team's blogsite. I wanted to find a way to keep people posted on our team so here it is...Hope you enjoy it.

Coaches' Bios

Coach Matsumoto -
Grew up in Seattle, WA and attended King's High School. Attended Trinity University on a football scholarship and was a four year starter. Started his coaching career at Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, CA where his teams won CIF in football and track & field. This is his 3rd year as a teacher and 5th year as a coach. Coach Matsumoto is the head coach and coaches the relays.

Coach Viso -
Grew up in Los Angeles, California. She attended Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School (c/o 99) where she was on the Cross Country and Track teams, and SRLA (all 4 years for each). She attended the California Maritime Academy (CMA) for college. At CMA she was on the Intercollegiate Crew team for 4 years and Intercollegiate Womens Volleyball Team for 1 season. She chose to coach sports teams because she had such a positive experience being involved in them. She has been coaching different sports for 4 years now, ever since she started teaching. Coach Viso is the shot put coach.

Coach Soriano -

Coach Soriano grew up in Anaheim, California. He attended Anaheim High School where he played football and wrestled. After high school, he went to the Army for 3 years and was stationed in Lawton, Oklahoma. He went to college at Cal-State University, Fullerton, and majored in Sociology. He enjoys coaching because he thinks sports teach students many valuable life lessons such as team work and responsibility. Coach Soriano coaches high jump and the distance runners.

Coach Caver -

Grew up in upstate Newburgh, NY and attended Newburgh Free Academy High School. He attended Southern University on a track scholarship and also played football for 1 year. Started his coaching career at Van Nuys High School in the valley. Coach Caver also coaches football and this is his 4th year as a coach. Coach Caver coaches long jump and the sprinters.

Coach Lartey -

Grew up in Oklahoma and ran track & field at Tulsa University. Coach Lartey coaches triple jump and the 400m sprinters.

Coach Watson -

Grew up in LA and graduated from Poly High School in Sun Valley. Coach Watson coaches the hurdlers.

Team Philosophy

"More Than Track & Field". What does this mean...how can a track team be about more than track and field? We believe that track and field, sports in general is a great tool to help young men and women become better people. The main things we emphasize are...

LOVE - Love for each other. We must be willing to put our teammates ahead of our own selfish desires in order to achieve a common goal. "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends".

COMMITMENT - In order to achieve great things, we need to commit to hard work and to each other, even when things get tough.

DISCIPLINE - We cannot always do what we want but must be willing to do what we have to. That's how we pursue excellence.

CHARACTER - Your reputation is what people think of you but your character is who you are when no one is looking...are we willing to be men and women of integrity and work hard on and off the track even when no one is looking?

We do what we do as coaches to help kids achieve their athletic desires and dreams (get faster, become stronger, jump higher, win league, win CIF, etc), but ultimately, we want to develop them into great future friends, workers, husbands/wives and fathers/mothers. If we do that, then we have done our jobs to the fullest.

Achievements

2011 Season:

*Varsity Boys Team - Southern League Champs

(Undefeated at 6-0. Also, Bernstein High School's first ever varsity league title)

* Frosh/Soph Boys Team - Southern League Champs

(Undefeated at 6-0)

* Frosh/Soph Girls Team - Southern League Champs

(Undefeated at 6-0)

* In three years of existence, the frosh/soph boys team has not lost a league meet, going 18-0 over the 3 year span.

*Erick - 13th place in the 3200m at City Finals

2010 Season:

* Frosh/Soph Boys Team - Southern League Champs

(Undefeated at 6-0)

* Frosh/Soph Girls Team - Southern League Champs

(Undefeated at 6-0)

* Vallarriiee - 7th place in the 100m H at City Finals

* Kai - 6th place in the high jump at City Finals

2009 Season:

* Frosh/Soph Boys Team - Southern League Champs

(Undefeated at 6-0)

* Kai - 6th place in the high jump at City Finals

* Vallarriiee - 2nd place in the 100m H at Frosh/Soph City Finals

* At a first year school, the girls track team was the only varsity team to finish with a winning record (4-2) out of all the athletic programs at Bernstein High School.
